Almost literally a hole in the wall that you might miss, this little cafe has inexpensive but very tasty morels. They have an excellent Minorcan Datil hot sauce and mustard to complement the empanadas, sandwiches and sausages they serve. They provide a quick delicious break from your stroll down the busy shopping streets in historic St. Augustine. GO THERE you will not regret it!

The lemon cookies are really good! This is a fast inexpensive snack or lunch spot. Order at the counter and pull up a picnic table.

If you have been to St. Augustine any time in the last 30+ years I hope you have stopped by here. Tucked away on St George street is one of my favorite lunch spots and long standing St Augustine faves. With the area changing so much...martini bars, urban chains, and pirates around every corner it is nice to still have this little gem. Formerly family owned and operated the bakery was briefly closed and then acquired & renovated by Whetstone with the son of the original owner on board. A replica of the Salcedo house this place serves fresh, rustic Spanish fare in a no nonsense outdoor setting for reasonable prices. Those beautiful airy rolls with just a touch sourdough still remain, along with empanadas, sausage rolls, cookies and soups. They have added salads, pastries, an icee type machine and a few other items as well as extending the hours daily. & a credit card machine (cha Ching). After running from the rain at Ft Matanzas we headed to the old city and searched for some prime parking. The ominous clouds must have deterred tourists because they were empty at 1:30. We ordered a chicken and rice soup combo that comes with a cookie and roll; a side of picadillo soup, a beef empanada combo with cookie and roll; a sausage roll combo with roll and cookie; 3 canned beverages for $28. The chicken & rice soup is hot and flavorful with large chunks of chicken and a complementary portion of white rice and just the right seasoning. Picadillo --- think the inside of a stuffed pepper turned into a soup. This soup is hearty and eats like a rib sticking chili. The sausage rolls or as my kids call them giant pigs in a blanket are always a hit. Not too spicy or greasy. We always enjoy an empanada. A good portion of filling to baked dough outside. The dough isn't overly worked or dry but has a nice sheen and crispness. A variety crispy cookies from an old recipe with flavor like cinnamon, lemon and almond. If you are a crisp sugar cookie lover you will enjoy this little treat. Soups are served in styrofoam cups with plastics spoons. All meals are served on wax paper on a basket. Receipt has 10% off Whetstone. Always clean patio tables available with a few in the shade. A clean restroom just feet away. The service is more lunch lady cafeteria friendly than friendly tourist hospitality. No soup for you ring any bells?

I only tried a quick snack at this place. The store is a bit cramped. There were lots of great smells coming from inside. The fresh baked bread looks fluffy and good. I tried the beef empanadas. They were bland, but dipped in the hot sauce, they were oKay. For beverages, the only choices offered are soda and filtered water. They need to expand. Plenty of out door seating, but beware the ants.

The food isn't bad. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here. Expect to pay tourist prices.

A rustic and enjoyable adventure while touring downtown. I ate here as a kid, and kids still love the outdoor picnic tables and ability to run around while munching on authentic spanish bakery items, and crispy old fashioned fill-your-hand cookies. If you're visiting in cooler months, their soups are a must try. The renovation didn't hurt the old world charm, and you will love being cozied away, feet from the madding crowd.

Awesome food for an awesome price. Usually in the historic area of St. Augustine everything is so overpriced but this tucked away gem is perfect. We got 2 lunch combos which are $6.50 each and include a entree, a drink, a Cookie and a piece of fluffy bakery bread. Here were our choices one with Piccadillo with rice, almond cookie and water and the other combo was the 1709 salad with balsamic dressing on the side, an almond cookie, and a water bottle. Afterwards, We didn't feel overstuffed or hungry since the portion size was just right. And all the food from the entrees to the bread to the cookie was delicious. If you're traveling on a budget definitely stop by.

This place is the absolute best lunch value in St. Augustine. It is no frills, but the picnic table eating area is spacious and airy, and the empanadas are a perfect light meal or heavy snack.

  • Andy M.

I give 'em a three. The Beef Empanada I had seems easier to digest than the Chicken empanada my wife had. Their phone # on the cash register receipt is 904-825-1700.

A nice place to stop for a quick, traditional Spanish bite (empanada, soup, etc.) while on the move in downtown St. Augustine. Sit at one of their picnic tables or simply take it to go. Much like a food truck but in a tiny historic house instead. Pretty simple approach. Good taste overall.

My husband and I sampled a big swath of the small menu at this place. The beef and chicken empanadas were both good but a little dry. Be sure to try the hot mustard and sweeter red hot sauce. They both have datil peppers and make everything tastier. The picadillo was rich and delicious. Far and away, the highlight of this meal was the cinnamon roll. Soft, warm, gooey, and with a maple-coffee frosting. The Spanish bakery is right in the heart of the Old Town and has quick service with nice courtyard to sit in. My husband and I enjoyed a filling, tasty lunch for $14 dollars total. This is in the middle of a highly touristy area, mind you! Excellent value in St. Augustine.

St. Augustine is a town filled with history. Among the blacksmith demonstrations, the ghost tours, and the oldest wooden schoolhouse (in the US), lies an iconic gem that manages to evoke the feel of Spanish Colonial dining. From the time of discovery at my 4th grade field trip to present visits, the Spanish bakery is a must do destination when in the area. Tucked into a secluded courtyard in a reconstruction of the Salcedo House, it is the ideal spot for an inexpensive and authentic lunch experience. There are minimal frills, so don't expect much, it really just a simple order and go place. The chicken soup with rice is a classic, and for a paltry addition of $2 you can make it a meal complete with a drink and a cookie. The soup is hot and fresh and comes alongside a soft, pillowy bun perfect for tearing and dipping. Other regular options include the picadillo, or choice of homemade empanada. In addition, the Spanish Bakery has rotating "specials" as well. On the last visit a particularly interesting choice was Minorcan sausage pilaf made with local datil pepper (an extra spicy variety indigenous to the area). Place your order and then move along. There are plenty of picnic tables available for seating. Affordable comfort food not to be missed!

Yummy! We ordered one chicken and one beef empanada, it was delicious! I also got the caramel apple turnover.... it was great!

Prices increased to $6.50 for a combo. Kind of expensive for this family of four, but I still love it here. Always a special treat!

Beef Empanadas at $3.50 each. It's a tiny little place behind the ice cream shop (hence the Harry Potter 1/2 address) and I'm so glad my son and I finally stopped in. A few years ago I passed by this shop and it was close to 3pm, so I missed out. But that delicious smell (must have been the bread or something) still lingered in my brain up till now. So I just had to try this place! I'm so glad I did! The empanada was cheap, delicious, and filling. My only complaint is that the crust seemed a tad dry. But otherwise, so good. They also offer different types of breads, some soups and stews (including one that was chili without the beans, cold gazpacho, and chicken noodle soup - all also $3.50 each). There was a long line of people waiting to eat here, so you know it must be good. Seating is outside on the umbrella covered tables.

Great food. I went back three times.

  • Susie R.

Their beef empanadas are sooo good! The crust is buttery and flaky and delicious. The filling was mildly spicy and well seasoned. They also gave us a 10% coupon on the receipt for Whetstone's next door. The lady working here was very friendly!

    (5)
  • Orange S.

I would give this 10 stars!! Amazing service quick delicious bites. Try the turnovers or empanadas . Also their receipt gives you ten percent of Whetstones Chocolates right next door. Must come. Old kitchen historic building too.

  • Courtney H.

Great little spot! Found this place by walking by. It's behind another building/wall. You stand in line and order cafeteria style. The combo for $6.50 comes with one item (empanada, soup, etc),bread,a drink and a cookie. We dined under a large tree out side of the place. They have little picnic tables. It's very quaint. The chicken empanada was tasty! The chicken soup was the best I've ever had! The bread was good too. The lemon cookie wasn't the best but I ate half of it. I would definitely return. The food was fresh and the staff was quick and helpful.

  • Teresa L.

Quaint little place that's only open during the day. Empanadas were ok. Probably not my favorite, but not bad either.

    (3)
  • Rami B.

The reviews of this bakery made me have serious doubts about trusting my fellow yelpers. Quaint and old can only get you so far- a bakery has to have treats that actually look and taste good- or in the case of the Spanish Bakery- at least have a taste! The empanadas were dry, with too much dough to filling ratio. The dough had absolutely no flavor. The chicken filling had some flavor, more than I can say about the beef, which was bland and flavorless. Despite being hungry, I could not force more than 2 bites of the beef empanada. The dry cookies and loaves of bread were not even tempting before I had the empanadas, so needless to say, I did not try them. Big disappointment.

    (1)
  • Queenie D.

It is small and quaint, and like most of the places around the area, it has a hint of "old worldliness" to it. I like how their breads are made the old fashioned way, and the bread itself is delicious and reasonably priced. They had a few variety of empanadas there, and I wish I had tried them, but I had a lot of food already that day. But! We did buy a loaf of freshly baked bread for 2 bucks and that, was without a doubt, some old school delicious bread. Worth checking out.

    (4)
  • Matt M.

$5.50 for a fresh-made meal with cookie & drink? Yes, and it's delicious! Been eating here for 8 years every time I go to St. Augustine with my students. The kids love it too! The bakery is open early (9:30 AM - 3:00 PM) and once it runs out of an item for the day, no more is made. In other words, get there as early as possible.

    (5)
  • Diana M.

This is a cute little stand but the chicken empanada was a little dry in my opinion. It might have just been the batch, I would probably go back and give them a second chance.

    (3)
  • Michelle C.

I've waited 10 years to return for the empanadas. They're just as heavenly as before. The bread is always fresh and now they have more sweet options. Best place to eat in town.

    (5)
  • Chris C.

The bread is just as good as ever. Tearing into a hot loaf while sitting under the huge Cedar tree is one of my fave childhood reinactment experiences.

    (5)
  • David E.

We got cinnamon rolls and empanadas. It seems the rolls were different then I remember from last year, but the glaze was the same and that is what makes them so good. The empanadas are the best I've ever had! Always a must stop when we visit St Augustine!

  • Elissa W.

A great treasure! So glad it reopened on the 12th! My husbands and his Family have gone here for years and can't get enough of it! Thank you to the whetstone a for brining it back!

Love this place. The food is good and service is given with a smile. Simple yet wonderful!

  • Kelly W.

I love this place. Nothing fancy, but dang good food. I'm glad I don't live any closer to the area or I would be there ALL the time. It's not open for very long throughout the day and once the food sells out for the day, it's gone. I can't say that I've ever had that happen to me recently, but I wouldn't push my luck! Everything is very well priced - a lunch special for $5 which includes an empanada, a huge roll of bread and a drink. (There are other combos as well - chili with rice as another example.) It is all outdoor seating, but most of the tables are under really huge, old trees that provide a ton of shade. Man I shouldn't be typing this when I'm hungry as I really want to drive to St. Augustine right now. It would TOTALLY be worth the 2 hour drive!

    (5)
  • Rebecca B.

So uniquely St. Augustine! A must visit for us each time we visit the historic city. Only open through lunch, it's a quick and easy, inexpensive Spanish lunch. I love the empanada combo. It's served with fresh bread, a delicious cookie, and a canned soda or bottled water. We're going back before the end of our trip to get a fresh loaf to take home!

    (5)
  • Esme J.

A bite to eat while exploring my old footprints of a youth that was filled with wonder and fun. The empanadas are by far absolutely delicious.

    (5)
  • Kristina K.

Probably my favorite place to eat in St. Augustine. Incredible prices and amazing food. It can be a little tricky to find if you haven't been before and on a hot day sitting outside next to the super hot building where they bake the cookies and make the empanadas can be a little miserable but its totally worth it. Make sure to find this hidden gem next time you're on St. George street!

Fabulous Food Quaint Courtyard Hidden Gem in St. Augustine Will have again while we are here these 3 days!

  • Heath N.

Empanadas are undercooked and doughy. Beef filling with raisins was OK chicken was beyond bland. The sausage "roll" was OK because the meat was decent and had good flavor. The Picadillo was watery chili with rice. Can't recommend a this place.

Small place but great food! Best deal on St. George St.

  • Dave W.

We found this place quite by accident while walking around St Augustine. The menu is limited and consists of empanadas, sausage rolls, home made soups, fresh rolls and cookies. That's it - plain and simple. It is located off the street and there is a tiny little sign outside - it actually lists all the food items. To get there you walk past a choclatier ( looked qite nice as well) and into an open area. The whole building cannot be more that 10 feet by 20 feet and all eating is done outside on picnic tables located under the trees. They had a lunch special - 1 main item, a roll, a cookie and a drink for $5.00. (Okay, I admit to also having a container of soup for $ 3.50 but I had an excuse - I was on vacation) Lunch for two for $ 13.30 - you can't beat that. Not gourmet but a nice place for a quick, inexpensive lunch. They are open from around 11 am to 2 pm. I have no idea where the kitchen is but it sure wasn't in the building. In fact, when we ordered we took the last two empanadas, causing the attendant to shout to no one in particular "I need more empanadas". the next thing you know, a tray of hot empanadas were handed through the back window.

How is it possible that the prices here seem to be the same as they were when I first came here 15 years ago? The hot fresh bread is delicious. We always like to take a little leftover bread with us to the koi at the courtyard of the Lightner Museum.

Simple, easy, hearty food. The Spanish Bakery acts as a sort of cafeteria/mess for the workers and visitors of the Spanish Colonial Quarter museum, but is also, of course, open to the public for limited hours. The fare is basic, and it is cheap. Always available are Chicken Noodle Soup, Empanadas, and Beanless Chili, served over white rice. Other soups and entrees come and go. For myself, it's four dollars for an entree, cookie, bread and drink combo. For you, it's five dollars. I am a city tour guide. Hah. What I really mean to say, though, is that it's a very affordable, very pleasant place to stop in for a basic meal. When school tour groups come through town, it can be hectic, with entire classes scarfing hot dogs in the courtyard. Most of the time, though, it's a cool little place with a nice experience to offer. Keep in mind: like some other places in downtown St. Augustine, it's CASH ONLY.

    (4)
  • Heather S.

Fantastic! Cinnamon rolls were awesome and so were the empanadas. Words really can't describe how amazing these 2 items are!

  • Joseph L.

As I look at the few reviews that are of the Bakery I feel it fair to say that there needs to be a more recent post. I have eaten there maybe Oh I am not sure 100 times and every visit its flavorful food, simple and always always a great value! To me the bakery is what St Augustine is, a city with great History great flavor and great value. The only thing that I could say against The Bakery is when the food is gone its gone to me though thats a quality issue thats what makes it what it is. If you are ever in the area its a must place to eat but, go early when the food is gone its gone!

  • Erica D.

The Spanish bakery is only open on Novembruary 32nd, between the hours of 3 am- 3:13 am. I am kidding, but really, it's a small window. Blink and you miss it. 11am-2pm. I grew up in St Aug, and the Spanish Bakery was grounds for skipping school. The main draw for me was the freshly baked bread. I think you can get a small loaf, which is perfect for one person, for $1. There is also some sort of lunch special for $5 which includes an entry, a cookie, a drink, and a bread. I hear the empanadas are delish, but they are pork, which isn't my favorite. I should just get over it and try one the next time I am in town. The bakery is located in a secluded courtyard off of busy tourist destination, St. George St. You have to walk past Whetstone's to get into the courtyard. The building is a tiny structure that probably used to be the kitchen for one of the historic homes. You eat outside under the oak trees. My only complaint would be that they have Parkay fake butter in squeezy bottles out on the picnic tables in the hot sun as your only butter option.

I read about the Spanish Bakery in my Lonely Planet guidebook and had to check it out. It took a bit of finding but was well worth it. It is located in a courtyard just past the Whetstone Chocolate Shop. The food is simple but definitely tasty. They have several lunch specials for $5.50. I got a soup, roll, cookie and soda and then added an empanada on top, all for $8. Just be aware that it is cash only and enjoy.

After seeing the rave reviews, we added this to our to-do list while in St. Augustine. We had a late night the day before and comfort food was in order....this didn't disappoint. There was a line out the door when we arrived. If you visit, bring cash. They don't take credit cards and also close at 3:00 or until they run out. The bakery is very small, so expect to order quickly as the line goes fast. There are plenty of picnic tables to go around in the outside patio/garden area. The empanadas have a great flavor but don't expect a spicy empanada like the Jamaican empanadas. It is mild but still quite good. I don't normally eat sausage but my husband got the smoked sausage wrapped in biscuit dough & it was quite tasty. We also had the picadillo & chicken soup....both were delicious and served with a yummy homemade roll. We had the almond & cinnamon cookies for dessert which was the perfect finish. We wanted to try the cinnamon roll, but they had sold out, so go early if you don't want to miss out! If you want a quick, affordable family style lunch, this is the place. Perfect comfort food!

delicious and cheap. what more could you ask for? my favorite treats are the scones. especially the blueberry. absolutely perfect. but really, you can't go wrong with anything here.

  • Mukur H.

First off, this is a small place that can be hard to find. You are not going to get a gourmet meal here, but you will get good home cooked food. We all enjoyed the tastey bites we had for breakfast. Unfortunately, I went here two years ago so I don't remember anything else besides it being food. I recommend going here for breakfast prior to walking around in St. Augustine for the day.

  • Amanda W.

This is one of my favorite places in St. Augustine. I've probably been coming here since the late 1970s and they still have some of the best empanadas around. We tried their cinnamon roll and sausage roll (separate menu items) for the first time and they were both amazingly delicious! The bread is made fresh. It's got cute outdoor seating and some of the cheapest prices in the city. It's a bit hard to find, but it's worth the trip.

We happened on this tiny little spot - and glad we did! We had two kinds of soup plus warm fresh bread, beverages and cookies for $12. Filling, homemade and delicious!

Don't ask questions, just go as fast as you can. Empanadas, chicken soup, and cinnamon rolls are superb.

    (5)
  • Bon Young S.

The Spanish meat sauce(picadillos?) s awesome. Empanadas is a bit on the dry side. Outside sitting has good sun, so would have been good if it were a bit warm.

    (5)
  • Amanda F.

Excellent food for the price! The only reason I select four stars instead of five is they have limited offerings during lunch and seating is outdoors with umbrellas, so no way to get out of the humidity while you eat. Fortunately, this isn't much of an issue since I'm accustomed to the heat and humidity of Florida. Enjoyed the chicken empanada meal that included a Coke, fresh bread roll, and cookie. The receipt also has a 10% off coupon for Whetstone Chocolates. Looks like this is going to be our new stop each time we visit St. George Street!

    (4)
  • Mathew T.

Recommended by the affiliated or associated Whetstone Chocolate, the Spanish Bakery is a quick spot to grab some okay food to fill up on. Prices are decent and selection is limited. We didn't try the bakery items (stuck to the hot dog in a blanket and empanada), but the buns and crumbles looked awesome.

We made it a point to visit Spanish Bakery based on the positive reviews here on Yelp. And as proven time and time again, the Yelp community hardly fails in their recommendations. Spanish Bakery serves rustic, traditional Spanish baked goods. They are quite reasonably priced and they have a picnic area under a tree where you can enjoy their offerings. We ordered the soup and the empanadas, The service was really quite friendly. When the lady overheard me say that I do not eat red meat and was ordering the sausage under the notion that it was made of pork, she kindly informed me of this and told me that her husband was at that very moment making chicken empanadas and asked me if I was willing to wait. That was very much appreciated. If you are in the area, I suggest you check them out for a quick bite.

    (5)
  • Alex P.

$4 for an empanada with no taste. We had the chicken and beef. The chicken literally tasted like there was no seasoning and the beef had a little bit of flavor. But basically just tasted like Taco Bell meat. I really wish I would have read some of the other reviews before actually heading here. Sometimes the star rating doesn't tell you enough.

Cool Spanish Style Bakery Authentic Spanish empanadas, tapas, sausage rolled in pastry, cinnamon rolls and peanut butter cookies. The small bakery building, officially named the Salcedo House, and the outside picnic tables underneath a shady cedar tree are owned by the University of Florida, which rents out roughly 30 historic state-owned properties scattered around the city. The bakery, started by Marge and Dewey Adelsperger approximately 38 years ago.

Portions on the turnovers were a little smaller than expected, but very flavorful and very good. Where they excelled were their other pastries. The apple turnover was INCREDIBLE. We recommend for sure :)

  • Richard T.

I love Empanadas and this place has chicken and beef both are pretty good the apple turnover my daughter got was awesome, so she says. the date pepper sauce they give is sort of sweet with a little kick on the back end, sort of addicting. the prices are way out there $4.00 per empanada; but it is in a tourist town for that price you should get 2 and a drink. oh well lower price sell 5 times as many, make more money and maybe get better known.

Spanish Bakery was a favorite stop on school field trips to St. Augustine. I was super sad when I heard they were having to close, but giddy like a school girl when I heard they were going to be able to remain open. Today it was the first stop on our snacking tour of Old St. Augustine. We ordered a chicken empanada and a soda. The crust of the empanada was not too thick and was cooked just right. But for me it was kind of plain, like it needed a touch of salt (or something) in the dough. The filling had good flavor and was piping hot. For an afternoon snack, it was the perfect stop on our tour. I'll have to remember this little place tucked away off the main street, but with the new signage, it's much easier to find.

One of the best kept secrets, even locals can walk past it for years without knowing its there. Family owned for several generations. It's a great stop for hot soup and fresh baked bread from a wood burning stone oven. It's easy on the wallet dispute it being in such a touristy area.

This is a very small Spanish colonial style bakery. $5.50 for a fresh-made meal with cookie & drink. Yes, and it's delicious! Been eating here for more than 10 years every time I go to St. Augustine. I just love this place.

Come early for better parking and check out the architecture along George street enroute to this small quaint bakery. Promptly opens 10am. The bread, we heard arrives at 11am, so enjoy some empanadas and almond cookies (yumm). The empanadas are plain and may have to add some Datil pepper sauce to give it some spice and heat which makes it perfect. Their bread is awesome!!!

  • Heather P.

This is a Spanish colonial style bakery. I can't speak to the other items, but the bread, cookies, chicken soup, picadillo, and empanadas are authentic fare from that time period. In the old-fashioned way, the bakery is open early (9:30 AM - 3:00 PM) and once it runs out of an item for the day, no more is made. In other words, get there as early as possible. A lot of festivals have events that take place in the bakery's courtyard, and there is shaded bench seating there year-round. Spanish Bakery is where locals go for brunch, so you may see reenactors sitting around, talking. WHAT I'VE TRIED THERE: The loaf of bread, beef empanadas, and sweet potato empanadas. Great empanadas. Sweet potato empanadas are an off-menu special, but they always have them during the annual Minorcan Festival, which hosts certain events at the Spanish Bakery courtyard. The bread loaves are full size loaves, like the bread that the Pennsylvania Dutch/Deutsch make. My parents get a loaf of bread on virtually a daily basis (Give them this day their daily bread?). At $2 a loaf, it's infinitely cheaper (not to mention fresher, softer, and tastier) than grocery store bread.

A great little place for a light lunch. My wife and I ate here several times. For 5.50 you can get a sausage roll, fresh baked roll, Cookie & soda. Seating is outside on picnic tables. Have to keep,an eye out or you will walk right past the place.

  • Stacey S.

We wanted to make sure we got here early, so that we would get a cinnamon roll. I'm not sure it's the best I have ever had, but still very good. You can order them without icing, but I'm not sure why anyone would do that. Get the icing! We also picked up some delicious lemon cookies, and a biscuit wrapped sausage. We will have to go back to try the empanadas, they must not come out until later in the day.
